Filoni's initial idea for the series revolved around a recurring cast of characters who traveled aboard a spaceship similar to the Millennium Falcon the ship's crew would have included a smuggler, his girlfriend, a Gungan named Lunker, a Jedi padawan named Ashla, and her Jedi Master. Star Wars: The Clone Wars was then announced at April 2005's Celebration III, which Lucas referred to as "a 3-D continuation of the pilot series." Dave Filoni was hired as supervising director, and was familiar with previous Star Wars animation projects. Despite having the third and fourth most appearances, respectively, and less appearances than Skywalker and Kenobi, series creator Dave Filoni says that the show is about Tano and Rex. Original characters Ahsoka Tano and Rex are also main protagonists. The returning two characters that serve as lead characters are Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi. However, there are four characters who serve as overall protagonists, all of which serve Supreme Chancellor Palpatine in service of the Republic. The focus is on several different characters, often switching focus on the protagonist. It spans three years, and fleshes out the story of the war in a manner that spans the Star Wars Galaxy and fleshes out Force-users, soldiers, politicians, and bounty hunters. Star Wars: The Clone Wars is a seven-season-long series that focuses on different aspects of the war between the Galactic Republic and Confederacy of Independent Systems.
